Novel Report: Harnessing the Economic and Environmental Benefits of Advanced Biotechnology

©AB4S

The first Advanced Biotechnology for Sustainability report reveals the potential of advanced biotechnology to reduce global emissions by 5% and generate $1 trillion in economic value in food and agriculture, chemicals, personal care and transportation fuels.

This report is a first-of-its-kind publication collaboratively co-authored by Arsenale Bioyards, Basecamp Research, Cradle, Darwin International, EIT Food, Evonik, The Good Food Institute Europe, Invert, Lallemand, L'Oréal, and ShakeUp Factory, with knowledge and analytical support from McKinsey & Company.

KEY FINDINGS

  • Advanced biotech could reduce global emissions by 5% — equal to three times global aviation emissions

  • The sector holds a $1 trillion economic opportunity, comparable to Switzerland’s GDP

  • Scaling bio-based solutions could free up land the size of India

  • Potential to reduce water use equivalent to six times the Nile’s annual flow

To realise this potential, the coalition calls for greater collaboration, investment, and a shift toward large-scale deployment of biotech solutions.
