Four priority molecule families to unlock industrial biotech scale

The first Advanced Biotech for Sustainability (AB4S) report published in 2025 asked a big question: 
How large is the economic and environmental opportunity in advanced biotechnology? The answer reframed how the industry thinks about deployment. 

Report 1 mapped the sustainability potential of bio-based molecules in unprecedented depth and distilled the path to scale into three actionable principles: bring deep tech into low-tech infrastructure, minimize variables early, and standardize wherever possible. 

The trillion-dollar market opportunity by 2040 was the headline that travelled, but the substance that drove the conversation was what deployment would actually require. This report addresses a harder question that followed, the one executives and investors kept asking: 
Where, specifically, should we start? 

This report answers that question.
After screening more than 300 molecules across 40 chemical families, conducting over 30 expert interviews, and pressure-testing conclusions at a full-day industry workshop, the AB4S coalition identified four priority molecule families—terpenes, peptides, non-catalytic proteins, and hydroxy acids. Not the only candidates, but the ones the coalition judged to be both the most compelling near-term opportunities and the most representative of the scaling challenges ahead, and whose infrastructure opens the door to many more.
